Meet apprentice Chris Lockyer

In National Apprenticeship Week meet another of our apprentices fulfilling a vital role for us while enhancing their own learning.

Chris Lockyer, who works for our Chequers Contract Services division, is studying for his NVQ level 2 horticulture qualification, which is equivalent to a GCSE pass.

‘When my manager asked if I would like to go to college and gain a qualification that would help with my day-to-day role I thought it was a great opportunity,’ he said.

‘The course has given me more knowledge of the various plants, shrubs, trees and weeds I encounter during my work.

‘Thanks to my studies I also have a better understanding of the right time of year to cut each plant back and why this should be done.

‘I am very happy with the course because I am learning a lot and I am really enjoying my job.

‘I would recommend an apprenticeship to everyone, as it has widened my knowledge so much. I have already achieved the PA1 qualification in pesticide training and would like to go on and gain the PA6 qualification.

‘In the future I hope I will be able to run my own horticulture business.’
